Romance Scams
Online dating fraud and emotional manipulation for financial gain
How It Hooks You (Psychology)
- •Build emotional connection over weeks or months
- •Declare love quickly and intensely
- •Create a fabricated life story (often military, working abroad, widowed)
- •Exploit loneliness and desire for connection
- •Use reciprocity: "I love you, help me if you care"
Red Flags to Watch For
- Refuses to meet in person or video chat
- Claims to be overseas (military, oil rig, doctor without borders)
- Declares love very quickly
- Asks for money for emergencies, travel, medical bills, business
- Photos seem too good to be true (reverse image search finds model photos)
- Stories don't add up or change over time
- Isolated you from friends and family who express concern
- Asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers
Common Examples
- •Military member stationed abroad who needs money to come home
- •Business owner with frozen assets who needs help
- •Medical emergency requiring urgent financial assistance
- •Investment opportunity the scammer wants to share with you
- •Customs fees to receive a package or inheritance
- •Asking for money to pay for a visa to visit you
What To Do Now
- Stop all contact immediately
- Block them on all platforms
- Do not send more money
- Report the profile to the dating platform
- File a report with IC3 (US) or Action Fraud (UK)
- Reverse image search their photos to see if they're stolen
- Talk to someone you trust — isolation is part of the scam
- Consider therapy or support groups for scam victims
If You Already Paid
- •Understand that recovery is very unlikely
- •Contact your bank or payment provider immediately
- •For gift cards, contact the retailer immediately
- •For wire transfers, contact the sending bank
- •Document all communications and transactions
- •Be prepared for emotional fallout — this is a real loss
- •Seek support from friends, family, or professional counselors
- •Report to authorities even if embarrassed — you are a victim, not at fault
⚠️ Avoid Round-Two Scams
Romance scam victims are often targeted multiple times. Be extremely skeptical of anyone new who shows interest, especially if they contact you through unusual channels or claim they can help you recover your money.
