Investment Scams

Fake investment opportunities, crypto scams, and guaranteed returns

    How It Hooks You (Psychology)

    • •Promise of high, guaranteed, or "insider" returns
    • •Create urgency: "limited slots", "exclusive opportunity"
    • •Use sophisticated-looking materials and fake credentials
    • •Exploit FOMO (fear of missing out) and greed
    • •Build trust slowly with small "wins" before the big ask

    Red Flags to Watch For

    • Guaranteed returns or "no risk" claims
    • Pressure to invest quickly
    • Request for payment via crypto, wire transfer, or gift cards
    • Unlicensed "advisors" or unregistered platforms
    • Claims of insider information or exclusive access
    • Difficulty withdrawing funds or viewing actual assets
    • Testimonials that seem too good to be true
    • Complex investment structures that are hard to understand

    Common Examples

    • •Crypto investment platforms promising 20%+ monthly returns
    • •Ponzi schemes paying early investors with new investor money
    • •Fake trading platforms showing fabricated profits
    • •Romance scam leading to investment "opportunity"
    • •Social media ads for "secret" investment systems
    • •NFT or metaverse land scams with inflated promises

    What To Do Now

    1. Stop all contact immediately
    2. Do not send any more money
    3. Contact your bank or payment provider to report fraud and attempt reversal
    4. File a report with the SEC (US), FCA (UK), or equivalent financial regulator
    5. Report to local law enforcement
    6. Document everything: screenshots, transaction records, communications
    7. Check if the platform/advisor is registered with regulatory authorities

    If You Already Paid

    • •Be realistic: recovery is unlikely, especially for crypto, wire transfers, or gift cards
    • •Contact your bank immediately if payment was recent (within hours/days)
    • •For cryptocurrency, report to the exchange but expect little recourse
    • •Consult with a securities attorney if the amount is substantial
    • •Do NOT pay any "recovery" fees to get your money back — this is a follow-up scam
    • •Block all contact with the scammers
    • •Monitor your accounts for additional unauthorized activity

    ⚠️ Avoid Round-Two Scams

Beware of "recovery services" contacting you claiming they can get your money back for an upfront fee. These are almost always follow-up scams targeting previous victims. Legitimate recovery rarely happens, and legitimate services do not charge upfront fees or guarantee results.
